Not Adam Werritty

The Fox affair has the entire Foreign Office in an uproar. It’s no secret that the Ministry of Defence and the Foreign Office don’t always get along, and even the civil servants tend to be moderately tribal. More than one person in the Foreign Office has been seen to break out in a gleeful smile at the latest of the mushrooming allegations.

Jeremy likes to think he’s better than that. He doesn’t wish Fox ill, and the gay innuendo is frankly appalling. But he is a Liberal Democrat, and he does in his wilder moments entertain the thought of Paddy getting Defence in the event of a Fox resignation, so he can’t bring himself to wish Fox well either.

There are also, of course, the parallels to his own situation.

“Am I your Adam Werritty?” he asks Hague abruptly, on the Friday afternoon, as rumours are beginning to circulate that Fox is doomed.

Hague looks up from his papers, the distracted expression slowly clearing from his face. “Have you been following me around the globe unbeknownst to me?”

“No,” Jeremy says, rolling his eyes. “And no, I wasn’t your best man, and no, I haven’t been taking donations from lobbyists to convert you to the cause of Israel or whatever it is.”

Hague’s looking at him in the way that makes Jeremy flush, a cross between sardonic and warm, as affectionate as Hague ever gets.

Jeremy forges on. “But, you know, we’re, you know…and I just wonder what might happen, to our careers, if anyone ever finds out.”

Hague’s eyebrows haven’t come down yet from the repeated instances of ‘you know’. “No one is going to find out,” he says.

“We’re in the Foreign Office,” Jeremy says. “One of the biggest departments in the government.”

Hague sets his pen down. “Have you told anyone?”

“No. Although Sarah and Julian may have guessed,” Jeremy admits. “They say I don’t have a poker face.”

“Teather and…”

“Huppert.”

“As long as you haven’t confirmed it to Teather and Huppert, they won’t risk their careers by leaking such an unbelievable story,” Hague says.

Jeremy waves his hands hurriedly. “I wasn’t suggesting they’d leak it on purpose! They’re my friends.”

“Friends,” Hague says, picking his pen up again, “are a luxury.”

“You’re my friend,” Jeremy says, under his breath.

“I,” Hague says, and levels a gaze at him, “am your lover. And your superior.”

“My friend,” Jeremy says, defiantly.

Hague’s lips twitch. “Come here.”

Jeremy gets up, walks around the desk, and sits in Hague’s lap.

“Not quite what I meant,” Hague says, but he’s smiling, and Jeremy leans down to kiss that smile.

After a minute, Hague’s hand on his shoulder pushes him back a bit. “You won’t be found out. The Foreign Office is a professional department; and what’s more, it’s a secure one. No one knows what goes on in my office except the people standing in it.”

Jeremy nods, distracted by the shininess of Hague’s mouth, the glint of wetness on his lips.

“I won’t let anything happen to you,” Hague says, and his lips are soft. “You’re a proper adviser, you haven’t indulged in massive corruption, and you’ve done a good job. You are not my Adam Werritty.”

Jeremy kisses him again, and this time Hague lets him.

Jeremy happens to know Hague’s diary, and they have an hour before they have to be anywhere. Liam Fox may be getting the sack tonight, but Jeremy is the one who’s going to be fucked.

He wouldn’t have it any other way.
