Stars and Starbursts

“You didn’t have to go to all this trouble,” Caroline says, as the curtain falls and plunges the room into complete darkness. Even the crack under the door is plugged with a towel; it’s almost eerie how quickly the light can be snuffed out even in the middle of Westminster.

From somewhere in the darkness, she hears Dawn’s dry chuckle. “I know.”

Outside, the bustle and buzz of Saturday night goes on unabated. Earth Hour will not touch the outside world as it has touched this dark silent space; the tourists will whinge about their photo opportunities being ruined, with Big Ben gone dark, but the city trundles on regardless, ancient and alive.

As even this dark silent space is alive.

For Caroline can’t see Dawn now, in this blackness, but she can hear the hushed hitch of breath that is her inhale, in the space between. She can feel the whisper of air across her elbow, in the moment before Dawn’s fingers brush across her skin, charged and gentle, light and electric. She can taste her own anticipation, hear the murmur of clothes, feel air whistle across her shoulder, in the moment before lips kiss the join of neck and shoulder, in the moment before a hand comes to rest on her waist, snug in the curve, a perfect fit.

“Dawn…” she says – or perhaps she doesn’t manage to speak, perhaps the darkness swallows all words, leaves only the shape of the noise.

Dawn’s lips quiver against her skin, the husk of a laugh reaching her ears, and suddenly she feels like laughing, like jumping, like shouting, because she has the woman she loves in her arms, in her flat, in her life, and the darkness shimmers with her joy.

Her laughter bursts from her, a living thing bounding into the darkness, and Dawn’s arms tighten about her waist.

“Hush,” Dawn says, mock-severely.

Her voice has dropped, and Caroline thrills to it, turns her head to seek Dawn’s mouth, heat and passion and love, stars and starbursts.

Trudge on, great bright world.

In the darkness, there is Caroline, and Dawn, and the light between.
